    Commission study calls for action on authors’ remuneration

    Far be it from us to think the European Commission doesn’t want anyone to read its study on the remuneration of authors and performers in the audiovisual and music sectors, but we’re a bit concerned some of you may have missed that late Friday afternoon publication towards the end of July.  As an organisation that has been highlighting the poor situation of screenwriters and directors, this is a study we have been eagerly awaiting.  So, what does it say? The study finds clear problems that prevent authors from enjoying the full benefit of the exclusive rights conferred upon them by numerous European Directives.

    Bertrand Tavernier writes to EC Vice President Ansip

    Following a meeting between European Commission Vice President, Andrus Ansip, and SAA patrons Bertrand Tavernier, Roger Michell and Hugh Stoddart (see here) on 22nd June, SAA patron Bertrand Tavernier wrote to the Vice President to follow up on some important issues discussed at the meeting, such as film authors’ rights, territoriality and distribution, film heritage.  You can read his letter below as well as additional comments from German screenwriter and SAA patron, Jochen Greve, and Franco-swiss director, screenwriter and Europa Distribution president of honour, Ursula Meier, Romanian director and screenwriter, Cristian Mungiu and German director and screenwriter, Volker Schlöndorff.

    Copyright experts discuss solutions to guarantee authors’ fair remuneration

The International Literary and Artistic Association (ALAI), a well-known gathering of copyright law experts founded by Victor Hugo in 1878, held its annual international congress in Bonn on 18-19 June 2015.  The theme was ‘remuneration for the use of works: exclusivity v other approaches’.

    Political pick n mix before the copyright show
