Better late and effective than early and toothless

The adoption of the EU Directive 2019/790 on Copyright and Related Rights in the Digital Single Market (The Directive) was a great victory for authors after three years of intense negotiations and strong opposition from content sharing platforms like YouTube.

Scooping the scope of the SatCab II Directive

The ‘SatCab II’ Directive (EU) 2019/789, on copyright and related rights applicable to certain online transmissions of broadcasting organisations and retransmissions of television and radio programmes expanded the scope of the first Directive 93/83/EEC. It regulated retransmissions by other means than cable, direct injection and domestic retransmissions. What is the outcome of the implementation in the 24 Member States that have transposed the Directive so far?

    Secretary General's April Digest, 2023

In April we greeted 4 new SAA Patrons, participated in the European Parliament’s consultations on the implementation report of the Creative Europe programme and the EU framework on artists’ status, as well as its draft report on the European Media Freedom Act. I went to Prague for the European committee of CISAC, and we continued supporting our members with legal advice and EU level data for their national advocacy for authors’ rights.

A mixed image of equality in Slovenia’s audiovisual sector

Slovenia ranks 12th on the European Gender Equality Index, it performs particularly well in terms of access to financial resources and has recently progressed in participation in decision making. On the other hand, the audiovisual sector does not seem to progress in the same pace.

    Secretary General’s March Digest, 2023

In March, we promoted audiovisual authors’ rights at the international level, both with an online event with our Latin American colleagues and participation in the WIPO meeting of the Standing Committee on Copyright and Related Rights in Geneva. We also met with SAA members in Brussels for our general assembly meeting and partnered for the screening of a Swedish documentary film linked to the Swedish Presidency of the Council. This is all the diversity of activities that I love at the SAA.

In February, we were back to the Berlinale, we closed the SAA 2022 accounts and prepared our upcoming General Assembly meeting. The audiovisual sector so male

This year the Golden Globes, the Oscars and most recently the French César awards all failed to nominate any women for best director catalysing campaigns such as #OscarsSoMale and #CesarSoMale. Even the European Parliament’s LUX Audience Award only had one female director nominee out of five film finalists, making it clear that there still are many steps that need to be taken to reach a more equal and diverse film sector, and appreciation for women behind and on the screen.

    Meet our member: Copyswede

On 1 January Sweden took over the Presidency of the Council of the EU. Despite being one of the largest countries with one of the lowest populations per square kilometer in all of Europe, it is the home to Greta Thunberg, Alfred Nobel, Ingmar Bergman, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, ABBA and many more. I talked to Mattias Åkerlind, CEO of Copyswede, from a cold Stockholm.

A moving image of audiovisual authors’ rights

The pandemic, Russia’s war against Ukraine, the energy crisis, and political wins of the extreme right, are the latest big headlines of many recent reports about the world in 2022. Indeed, these disheartening developments have repercussions on the cultural and creative sectors too. At the same time, data and figures help us better understand our environment, and where we need to focus our efforts to move forward.
