  • European Parliament calls for Right to Fair Remuneration for Authors

    SAA welcomes the Resolution on a coherent EU policy for cultural and creative industries (CCIs) which calls for the “establishment of the right to fair remuneration and legal protection for authors”. SAA now calls on the Parliament to make this a reality by adding such a right for audiovisual authors in its work on the European Commission’s copyright Directive proposal.

    The 26th April is world intellectual property day. Authors’ rights and copyright are forms of intellectual property and are vital on two levels for screenwriters and directors. Firstly they are moral rights which protects the authors’ vision and the integrity of their work. Secondly they are essential to the remuneration of audiovisual authors.

    Keywan Karimi is a 30-year-old Iranian filmmaker who has been sentenced by Iranian authorities to six years in jail and 223 lashes. His crime: practicing his profession as a filmmaker and showing the unofficial face of Iranian society.
